The 75th UN General Assembly on 23/11 discussed and approved by consensus a Resolution on ASEAN-United Nations cooperation.
With 110 co-sponsors, this resolution on ASEAN-UN cooperation has reached a record of the number of co-sponsors since it was first introduced at the United Nations General Assembly in 2002, according to Notice of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As the Chair of ASEAN 2020, Vietnam is the country acting on behalf of ASEAN to preside over drafting content and negotiating resolutions.
Compared to the most recently passed resolution in 2018, this resolution has updated outstanding results of cooperation between the United Nations and ASEAN from 2018 up to now.
Achievements such as the ASEAN-United Nations Action Plan 2016-2020, the Security Council's first discussion on ASEAN's role in maintaining international peace and security in month of Chairman of the Security Council of Vietnam, and the adoption of the ASEAN-United Nations Action Plan for the period 2021-2025.
ASEAN's efforts to build communities and respond to the Covid-19 pandemic are also highlighted.
Many contents of cooperation between the United Nations and ASEAN have been supplemented or highlighted such as strengthening partnerships and cooperation in peacekeeping, building and maintaining; minimizing disaster risk and increasing response in emergencies; biodiversity and measures for the Decade of Action for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations, on behalf of ASEAN countries introduced the resolution, affirming ASEAN's central role in promoting partnerships, cooperation for peace and stability and development in the region, as well as the ever-strengthening comprehensive partnership between ASEAN and the United Nations.
The Ambassador also informed about new and prominent contents of the Resolution and thanked the UN member countries for the support of the UN member countries in the negotiation, co-sponsorship and ratification process.
The Resolution on ASEAN - United Nations cooperation is a two-year resolution, which has been considered and approved by the United Nations General Assembly since 2002 (until now all passed by consensus) with the aim of asserting and promoting cooperation relationship between the two organizations.
This year the United Nations General Assembly considers the topic of UN cooperation with regional organizations on November 23, about a month earlier than the previous sessions during the important activities of ASEAN. with the United Nations will only be ended October 11/2020.
Vietnam and ASEAN countries only have less than 1 month to negotiate and lobby member countries to sponsor and ratify the Resolution.
Accordingly, the resolution has reached three records for having the shortest negotiation time, the shortest campaign time and the largest number of co-sponsors compared to the resolutions of cooperation between ASEAN and the United Nations. now on.
